Transparent discussion and meaningful collaboration have always been at the core of NexGen’s approach to Indigenous, regulatory, and public engagement.
Joint Working Groups have been developed with the four primary Indigenous Nations in the Local Priority Area (LPA): Clearwater River Dene Nation (CRDN), Métis Nation – Saskatchewan Northern Region 2 (MN-S NR2), Birch Narrows Dene Nation(BNDN) and Buffalo River Dene Nation (BRDN).
Each Joint Working Group is composed of representatives of the respective Indigenous Nations in the LPA and NexGen to facilitate the exchange of information and sharing of Indigenous and Local Knowledge, including understanding each Indigenous Nation’s protocols on consent, ownership, access, control, and possession of their knowledge.
The Joint Working Groups support the incorporation of Indigenous Knowledge into Project design and environmental, social, and economic-related decisions. The groups meet regularly to discuss topics that are important to the local Indigenous communities and to the Rook I Project.
Indigenous Nations Leadership select Joint Working Group participants with consideration for diverse representation including Elders, youth, men and women, business owners, and traditional land users in the Patterson Lake area.
